Groundhog Predators: What Animals Eat Groundhogs?
Groundhogs and squirrels have a lot of resemblances. Groundhog is one of the most abundant species of squirrels. They are known with different names such as marmot and woodchuck. Mostly groundhogs live in forests. However, they are also used to live along roadsides and urban centers. Groundhogs become a grave problem for your gardens. They destroy crops and make your lands futile by digging deep burrows. These rodents have fur around their body.
Moreover, groundhogs can climb any tree or building. Thus, they are called expert climbers. When a groundhog perceives any sign of danger, it begins whistling to indicate looming threats. These animals are most active during the daytime. Groundhogs can eat different types of grasses and fruits. They can also spend many months in hibernation. Groundhogs use body fat during the isolation period. The life span of a groundhog spans about fourteen months.
Many animals prey upon groundhogs. The animals that capture groundhog as prey include foxes, bobcats, eagles, raccoons, dogs, and wolves. These beasts rely on a variety of rodents for food. However, the groundhog is one of the easy targets for them. They can kill it in the daytime.
Nevertheless, it is not such a simple task to kill a groundhog. It can hide into tunnels for a long time. Hence, catching groundhog requires cunning and effort on the part of predators.
Foxes
The most challenging predator for a groundhog is the fox. Fox is a very crafty animal. It slowly approaches a groundhog and captures them when they are busy eating. However, groundhogs can run away from foxes by climbing a tree.
Bobcats
In addition to foxes, bobcats also target groundhogs. Bobcats can climb trees up to a specific limit. Therefore, they pose more danger to a groundhog than foxes. Save, their lives groundhog, opt to dwell inside the tunnels. Bobcats are large-sized animals that eat meat, food, and drink milk. They rely mainly on mice, raccoons, hares, and opossums. Groundhog is also the primary source of flesh for bobcats.
Eagles
A starving eagle can target groundhogs. Eagles often prey on birds and inspect. Nevertheless, they also like the meat of groundhogs, mice, and opossums. When an eagle meets failure to catch prey, it hunts on the groundhog. It is not easy for an eagle to catch a groundhog. The rodent hides into burrows.
Dogs
The main domestic predator for groundhogs is a dog. When a marmot enters your garden, a dog can keep it away and sometimes captures it. Dogs eat the meat of groundhogs and relish its taste. Groundhogs may prove challenging prey for a dog. A dog cannot enter the burrows of rodents. Hence, when a dog attacks the rodent, it immediately runs into ground holes.
Raccoon
Groundhogs also have a raccoon as their adversary. The raccoons are large than the groundhogs. It has sharp claws and teeth. Moreover, raccoon uses poisons to blind the prey. Therefore, it can easily capture groundhogs.
In fine, groundhogs are small animals that can dig deep holes inside the land. They feed on insects, fruits, and vegetables. There are many groundhog predators. Groundhogs use whistles when they perceive any danger.
